FROGISM: INTERACTION OF ANIMALISM NEW STORE OPENS SHANGHAI IFC STORE
“Frogism”, a portmanteau, blending Frog and Sadism is the overlaying theme of Gentle Monster’s Shanghai IFC showroom. An idea derived from a phrase from George Owell, “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” (Animal Farm, 1945).
Branches sway left to right, scratching against the surface of the copper plate placed in front. The scratched copper surface becomes polished over time, while the rest oxidates, expressing the elements and emotions surrounding “Frogism”.
Mischievous childhood acts of observing and catching frogs best represent the sadistic side of human nature.
Based on the memory of the frog who leaps out of the unpredictable direction and disappears into the pond, the frog temple expresses the mutual feelings that come from the relationship of trying to escape.
A wooden kinetic object constructed with wood, brushes, and rope, repetitively mimics the motions of hitting, rubbing, and tickling the glass structure in placed in front of it.
“NO ANIMAL SHALL KILL ANY OTHER ANIMAL WITHOUT CAUSE.”
—GEORGE OWELL’S ANIMAL FARM, 1945
An idea reinterpreted and implemented into the design of Gentle Monster’s Shanghai’s space through vivid colors and through unique and abstract artwork inspired by a frog’s unpredictable movement.
A Sadistic portrayal of the movement from a restrained frog, abstractly expressed through a series of moving pieces.
