Gentle Monster’s newest edition, Samsara, is inspired by Ron Fricke’s documentary “Samsara(2012)” and the core philosophy of salvation introduced in Nietzsche’s “Thus spoke Zarathustra”. Nietzsche writes that salvation can only be achieved through becoming overman, by overcoming one’s self. He describes the three transformations of the spirit, the first, obedience symbolized by camel, lion for governance, and child for complete freedom. This maturity is expressed to connect with man’s desire to break free the inescapable wheel of life.

1) Samsara is a 2011 non-narrative documentary film, directed by Ron Fricke and produced by Mark Magidson, who also collaborated on Baraka (1992), a film of a similar vein. Samsara was filmed over five years in 25 countries around the world. It was shot in 70 mm format and output to digital format. The film premiered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival and received a limited release in August 2012.

2) Thus Spoke Zarathustra: A Book for All and None (German: Also sprach Zarathustra: Ein Buch für Alle und Keinen, also translated as Thus Spake Zarathustra) is a philosophical novel by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, composed in four parts between 1883 and 1885 and published between 1883 and 1891. Much of the work deals with ideas such as the "eternal recurrence of the same", the parable on the "death of God", and the "prophecy" of the Übermensch, which were first introduced in The Gay Science. FIVE NIDĀNAS
ZONE1 CAMEL:
THE RETRAINED LIFE
“He who climbs upon the highest mountains laughs at all tragedies, the connected links. These links present the mechanistic real or imaginary.”— Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra.link is asserted as a primary causal relationship between symbolizes an infinite loop.
This space shows an endless circle where man is left with no choice but to be receptive of the repetitiousness of life. A camel, representing obedience and submissiveness, along with the continuously weaving kinetic and chain locks piece metaphorically symbolizes an infinite loop.
This object is colorfully and extensively decorated, but is designed to show the contradictory repetitiousness and lifelessness hidden behind the glamor.
36 string skeins are continuously twined and unraveled on a closed track, symbolizing the unescapable course set by destiny.
ZONE2 LION:
THE RULER OF LIFE
Enlightened after the stages of obedience, the lion represents the new found narcissistic power and strength.
Passing the facade, visitors are led to small tented area, where a sngle tall chair is centered within a room surrounded of canvas, with a lion's tail placed as a symbol of dominance.
ZONE3 JUDGE: LIFE ON
THE SCALE
A place of judgement, where one who has reached the far ends of self will is able to reflect on one’s self, and overcome all to achieve a state of overman. Abstract and atypical visuals represent broken memory fragments from the process of self- reflection.
All before judgement, must dig out a shiny memory from within. Unearthing light from within a life buried under cement.
Passing the facade, visitors are led to small tented area, where a sngle tall chair is centered within a room surrounded of canvas, with a lion's tail placed as a symbol of dominance.
ZONE4 OVERMAN: BECOME A CHILD
As can be found in the words “No one has ever laughed as he did.”, this zone represents the difficult step and process of becoming overman. The kinetic installation illustrates the innocence and forgetful image of a child in a quirky and yet witty visual.
A child represents a new form of value found from purity, optimistic hope, playfulness and a new beginning
ZONE5 MOEBIUS:
WITNESSING SAMSARA
The Moebius installation that in literal terms represents infinity, symbolizes man who fail to achieve the stage of overman, and is stuck within the infinite circle of life. The repetitiousness of time and space is presented to deliver an experience of this complex mixture of emotions associated with this stage.
Blue plaster continues to rotate. The endlessness of this knot keeps everything contained, but also creates light and beauty from its own movement.
